Handling Text Overflow in CSS Flexbox and Grid

One of the most common issues developers face when translating a static design into functional code is handling dynamic content lengths. A design might feature perfect symmetry with two lines of text in every card, but in the real world, user-generated content rarely fits so neatly.

The Flexbox Overflow Problem

When placing text inside a CSS Flexbox container, flex items often shrink to fit their content. However, if a word is too long or a line of text doesn't wrap correctly, the flex item can push other items out of alignment or cause the entire container to break out of the viewport. A classic example is a long URL or an unbroken string of characters.

CSS Solutions for Long Text

To prevent layouts from breaking, you need robust CSS rules. The most effective combination for body text is:

.text-container {
    overflow-wrap: break-word;
    word-break: break-word;
    hyphens: auto;
}

This ensures that if a word is too long for its container, the browser will break it to the next line rather than overflowing the bounding box.

The CSS Grid min-width: 0 Fix

CSS Grid introduces a unique challenge. Grid items have a default min-width of auto, meaning they cannot shrink smaller than the size of their content (even if you apply overflow: hidden). If a block of text forces a grid item to expand, it can break the entire grid track.

The solution is surprisingly simple. Apply min-width: 0 to the grid item containing the text:

.grid-item {
    min-width: 0;
}
.grid-item p {
    white-space: nowrap;
    overflow: hidden;
    text-overflow: ellipsis;
}

Testing with Lorem Ipsum

The best way to guarantee your flex and grid layouts are robust is to test them with varying amounts of text. Generate a single word, a long sentence, and three paragraphs of Lorem Ipsum, and place them inside your components. If your layout can handle both a tiny snippet and a massive block of placeholder text gracefully, it's ready for production.
